GM Matthew Sadler and WIM Natasha Regan explain how AlphaZero - DeepMind's general purpose artificial intelligence algorithm - thinks, trains and plays chess.
In this game, Stockfish's unusual 8...a6 in the 6.Qc2 Meran Semi-Slav (a move also favoured recently by Stockfish NNUE) meets a vigorous reaction from AlphaZero, castling queenside at the earliest opportunity. An exchange sacrifice gives White dangerous kingside play with a queen, the two bishops and a kingside pawn majority pointing at the Black king. Stockfish demonstrates its unique ability to walk a defensive tightrope, finding attacking moves on the queenside that also contain a deep defensive purpose. Stockfish cannot stop AlphaZero breaking through but finds a perpetual in the nick of time!
Matthew and Natasha's new book "Game Changer" came out on 20th January 2019 and won the prestigious ECF Book of the Year and FIDE Book of the Year prizes for 2019! The Game Changer chess book is available in print and digital versions from these links:
